- Paperwork -

A sizable stack of sketches was produced during the design phase. Questions of overall proportions, button layout, and mechanical design were for the most part answered on paper. The sketch page below illustrates a rough chronological order of this process. Starting with iterations on the basic shape and ending with some user interface sketches with some logo design work captured in between. This page was created to serve as a condensed but energetic display of the pencil pushing behind the final product.

- The Basics of Pingree -

In addition to the series of GIFS above, a series of simple illustrator vectors were created to explain important details clearly. 

 
 

Charging & Filter Bypass

Micro USB's have become ubiquitous with batter powered consumer goods. Pingree has its Micro USB Port on the side to allow for charging while standing allowing for Semi-Permanent locations for use in the home to be possible. 

The 3.5mm Auxiliary Jack provides a true analogue connection. Plugging rather than pairing bypasses the on-board parametric equalizer used to tune Pingree to accept a wide range of music genres. A small but important feature for users who may want to dig deeper into this unique audio experience. 

 

 

 

 

 

 


User Interface Design Intent

Pingree was designed with the intent of highlighting its unique audio experience. Keeping that in mind, the user interface was kept in a similar arrangement to most other Bluetooth audio products on the market. 

 

 

 


Text book Proportions

Portability was a key element in the package Pingree presents. But due to the method in which Pingree amplifies sound, size matters. The size of the wooden panels used is one of the largest factors in the quality and amount of sound produced. The prototyping phase was lead with 3 main questions the question

1. Where is the middle ground between portability and amount of sound produced?

2.  Are user expectations going to be fulfilled in comparison to other BT audio products in this price bracket?

3. Where is the line between "portable audio" and "home audio"

The result was a 7.25" x 11" x 1.1" about the size of a modest text book. Near golden ratio proportions. Being Back-pack-able was crucial. Thus, making road life a real possibility for Pingree. 

Other, more technical reasons also came into play when deciding on the final dimensions and shape. 


Material Breakdown

An exploded view served two purposes. One is to further explain the materials used. The second purpose is to show potential backs who are curious the basics of the assembly.

2. Over-molded silicone rubber foot

3. Glass fiber reinforced injection molded plastic
